One of the most important abilities a soccer player can have is the ability to go from turning the ball into a full sprint. The opposite (the ability to go from a full sprint into a controlled turn) is equally important.
This workout will help you practice your quick turns with the insides and outsides of both feet, your acceleration, and your ball control. It helps you work on both your explosive starts when dribbling the ball as well as your quick decelerations.
To do this drill, take two cones and set them up 10-20 yards apart. You want to set them up far enough apart that you can get up to full speed sprinting between the two cones. This soccer workout combines the cone circles, toe taps, and tick tock soccer drills.
Once you’ve set up your cones, dribble the ball around one of the cones with the outside of your right foot. After you’ve done a full circle around the cone, stop the ball and do 5 toe taps. Make sure you’re facing away from the opposite cone when you do your toe taps.
Once you’ve done your five toe taps, turn around and sprint (while dribbling the ball) down to the other cone. Make sure to focus on explosively getting up to full speed as fast as possible. When you get to the other cone, dribble around it with the outside of your foot. After you’ve done a full circle around the cone, do 5 tick tocks.
Now sprint back to the original cone and dribble around the cone using the inside of your right foot. Do 5 toe taps, then sprint back to the other cone. Continue in this sequence until you’ve gone around both cones using the insides and outsides of both feet. This should equal 8 circles around the cones.
Finally, sprint back past the cone where you started. This is where you develop your “finish hard” mentality, so push yourself on this last sprint.
