Lots of players have been asking for some workouts that will help them become better strikers. This drill will help you develop skills that are essential to strikers, like speed and acceleration, fine ball control and ball retention, and shooting. However, while this drill focuses on soccer skills that make strikers better, it’s also a good drill for players that play other positions because it helps them with their fundamentals.
To do this drill, start by leaving a ball at the halfway line on the field. Set up 8 cones in a line 2-3 feet apart from each other. You’ll start off laying down on the end line (laying down increases the difficulty by making you engage your muscles to get up before you sprint). From a prone position, pop up and sprint to the ball you left at half field.
Dribble the ball from half field to the line of cones you set up. Make sure you do this at a high rate of speed. Once you get to the line of cones, decelerate and dribble the ball through the cones. This will force you to practice ball retention while going from a high speed to a slower speed.
Try to push yourself when dribbling through the cones – you want this to be a challenge, but you don’t want to try to go so fast that you lose control of the ball. Finally, once you’re out of the cones, have a shot on goal. Try to get your shot off as quickly as possible to practice quick transitions from dribbling to shooting.
