I get a lot of questions from players regarding what the best soccer drill is that they can do to develop their skills. Usually the question goes something like this – “What’s the best drill that I can do to become a better “x” (striker, midfielder, etc).” The answer to this question is simpler than you think.

Different drills help you develop skills. Some soccer drills help you work on your shooting. Other drills help you develop your dribbling. Each drill has a different benefit, and they’re all beneficial. The best drill for your situation is the one that you’re actually going to go out and do.

The best thing that you can do as a player is to actually get out and do SOMETHING. The best drill you can do is to set aside 15 minutes a night and just get touches on the ball. It doesn’t matter if you pick a drill like tick tocks, which enhances your close in side to side ball control, or a drill like V-Turns which helps you practice pulling and turning the ball.

Players often spend so much time trying to find the “best drill” for their situation that they never actually go out and spend time with a ball. Stop spending so much time trying to find the perfect thing to do and just go out and do something.

Once you’ve started, then you can evaluate what you’re doing well at and what you’re struggling with and adjust your training accordingly. If you notice that you’re weak at doing your quick turns, focus on drills that incorporate quick turns. If you’re struggling to get power on your shots, do a drill that involves a lot of shooting. Tailor your training to your situation, and this will be different for every person.

If you’re having trouble getting started, go to the videos section of my YouTube channel and just pick any of the soccer workouts shown there and do that. All of those workouts will help you get better. Don’t get so bogged down with finding the “perfect drill” that you don’t get started. Start with something, then adjust from there.
