How many times have you wished you were a better player? At some point in our development as soccer players, every one of us wishes that we were a better than we currently are. We wish that we were a great player like Lionel Messi in the big leagues, making a ton of money and just generally being awesome. We wish we were a little stronger, a little faster, or a little better. That’s natural. Everyone wishes things were different than they are. However, wishing doesn’t get you anywhere.
However, this doesn’t mean wishing is unhealthy or unhelpful, it’s just worthless as long as it stays in the realm of wishing. However, here’s how you turn your wishing into something positive – take your wishes, and turn them into goals. For example – have you ever wished you were a better dribbler? Well instead of wishing you were a better dribbler – set a goal so you can actually become a better dribbler. Make it something specific. Instead of “I wish I was a better dribbler,” how about “I’m going to become a better dribbler by practicing my dribbling skills every day for fifteen minutes a day.” Let your wishes drive your goals. See, this is where wishes are valuable – they represent the part of you that wants to grow and become better than you are now. They are the area where you imagine who you could be if your situation was different. If you couple them up with your willpower, your wishes can be a powerful ally. However, for this to happen, you have to be willing to work. Nothing good ever comes without effort.
Wish you were better? Don’t wish for it – Work for it.
