Yesterday You Said Tomorrow

We’ve all said something similar. “I’ll start training on Monday.” “I’ll start watching what I eat after New Years.” “I’ll start working out after things settle down.”

We all say things like this, and it seems perfectly reasonable. As soon as things get easier, I’ll get to work bettering myself. It feels like you’re setting a goal. However, I’ll let you in on a little secret.

 IT NEVER GETS EASIER.

Life will never perfectly align to make training seem attractive. There is ALWAYS something hard in your life that you can use as an excuse to not train, not diet, or not exercise. These little statements (“I’ll start after ‘x’ happens) are not goals, but rather, excuses masquerading as goals. Instead of making excuses not to start, why not make changes that make it easy to start?

For example – you may not be ready to run 3 miles yet. Fine – go out and walk half a mile. Take a step in the right direction. You may be too busy to go work out for an hour. Fine – find fifteen minutes to do body weight exercises at home. You might not have time to drive to the park and practice soccer for an hour. Ok – pick a couple drills and do them in your back yard.

You have to understand, what keeps most people from realizing their potential isn’t that they aren’t talented. They never even get to the level where talent matters, because they never get started. They never find out what they are capable of, because they don’t get far enough to fail. To paraphrase a quote from the Mighty Ducks, “They don’t even get far enough to be a ‘has been.’ They’re a ‘never was.'”

Don’t be one of these people. Instead, start today! It doesn’t matter nearly as much what you do as it matters that you do something. Then, once you start, focus on improving. Try to do a little bit more every week until you reach your goal. However, don’t worry about that right now.

JUST DO SOMETHING!

Remember – Yesterday, you said tomorrow.
